Eat the Fat to Lose the Fat

Eating Fat = Weight Loss. Wait, WHAT?!?!

Apparently it is true, provided its the good fats and you ensure your ratio's are well managed. So, I decided to try it.

I have decided for 4 weeks to follow the Ketogenic Diet which in simple terms is 75% good Fats, 20% Protein and 5% Carbs.... But Don't let that 5% Carb ratio fool you, in my mind it's useless and it should just be labeled Green Vegetables because that's essentially how low your Carb intake is on this diet.

This is most definitely not something I could see myself following long term and I would put it into more of a FAD Diet bucket but being that I have hit a wall with shifting my weight currently and I wanted an opportunity to invest time in learning about good fats - this is a great way to attack both.

From this experience what I have learnt is:

- Breakfast is the hardest meal to cater for. I am so used to eating Oats or Toast for breakfast and cutting out all grains makes this meal the hardest for me. On the plus side - you are allowed to add Bacon to your breakfast, so there's that.

- Training your body to burn fat for fuel instead of carbs is a quicker process than anticipated. I really thought that my body would struggle more than it did using fat as a source for fuel, and I thought my Carb cravings would be worse (they were pretty bad - don't get me wrong) but they didn't last as long as I thought they would.

- My gut feels incredible. I struggle with gluten and Lactose, your general tummy up setters, at the best of times and what I have enjoyed the most so far has been my tummy's general well being and lack of aches, pains and discomfort that I normally deal with.

- My energy levels are at an all time high. I have felt a legitimate rise in my energy levels, not just when exerting myself at the gym but general day to day routine wise.

- I am more focused. They say good fats are great for the brain and I can definitely say that I have seen an improvement in my brain function so far.

And the most asked about outcome from the experience so far.... 'Have you lost any weight?'

The answer is, yes. 2.5 Kg's in the first week while maintaining my muscle mass.... so for now, this seems to work.

In saying that, I put no faith in FAD diets and their long term weight loss success so for me this is about shocking the body, getting me off my plateau and kick-starting my weight loss again.

I have every intention of ensuring that my diet is sustainable for the rest of my life and supports weight loss and ultimately weight maintenance.

But most importantly I am educating myself on food, what it does to me not just for weight loss but mental and physical well being. This is ultimately what I need to ensure I know what the best things are to put in my body, long term.

So, peeps, I hope this helps give some insight into a different way of approaching food and weight loss and helps you to make the decisions that are right for you on your journey.

Until Next time...

Dawn xoxo
